DeVries Design and Landscape is a custom design-build landscape company serving high-end residential clients in Indiana. The company specializes in transforming backyards into beautiful, functional outdoor spaces through personalized design, 3D planning, and high-quality construction. Their work includes patios, retaining walls, pergolas, outdoor kitchens, pool areas, and other custom backyard features.

DeVries Design and Landscape is looking for a skilled Hardscape Foreman to lead a crew of 2-3 and help bring custom outdoor living projects to life. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who takes pride in craftsmanship, enjoys solving problems in the field, and can keep projects moving with excellence from start to finish.

The ideal candidate is comfortable with paver patios, retaining walls, outdoor kitchens, and other hardscape installations, and can guide a team with clarity, accountability, and a servant-leadership mindset. Key Responsibilities

Lead a crew of 2-3 to complete hardscape and outdoor living projects efficiently and safely
Install paver patios, retaining walls, pergolas, plantings, fire features, and related hardscape elements
Read design plans and translate them accurately into the field
Plan daily and weekly workflow to keep projects moving forward
Communicate clearly with the Project Manager regarding timelines, materials, progress, and jobsite needs
Delegate tasks effectively and provide direction, coaching, and support to crew members
Ensure all required tools, equipment, and materials are ready before leaving for the jobsite
Operate equipment and tools safely, including skid steers, excavators, concrete saws, and hand tools
Maintain a clean, organized, and professional jobsite
Uphold quality standards and identify issues before they become delays or rework
Help solve field challenges with adaptability and strong judgment
Represent the company well with clients through professionalism and respectful communication
Support team morale by leading through example and stepping in where needed

Qualifications

Prior hardscape or landscape construction experience required
Strong knowledge of paver patios, retaining walls, fire pits, pergolas, landscape lighting, and planting installation
Experience leading a crew and managing production in the field
Ability to think ahead and organize work by day, phase, and project goals
Comfortable reading plans and understanding how designs are built in real spaces
Experience with equipment and tools used in landscape construction, including skid steers and excavators
Strong communication and problem-solving skills
Carpentry experience is helpful but not required
Spanish language skills are a plus for communicating with crew members
Valid driver's license and insurable driving record required
Ability to reliably commute to the shop location each workday, as employees meet at the shop before traveling together to job sites. Candidates should be comfortable with a commute of up to approximately 1 hour.
Relocation may be considered; however, relocation assistance is not provided.

Position summary

The Hardscape Foreman is a frontline supervisor responsible for directly overseeing the on-site execution of hardscape construction and related landscape activities. This position translates contract scopes into daily work plans, assigns and supervises crew tasks, enforces site safety and environmental practices, operates and coordinates equipment, and performs hands-on work as required to meet project standards.

In scope and accountability, the Hardscape Foreman is responsible for delivering contracted hardscape services on schedule, within planned labor and equipment usage, and to the quality level specified by the contract and company standards. The role supports internal stakeholders (project managers, estimators, operations) by providing accurate field information, cost and resource feedback, and by maintaining complete documentation of progress, issues, and costs.

Objectives and Key Results (OKRs)

Objective: Deliver hardscape projects on schedule and within planned resources. Key Results: (KR1) 90% of assigned projects reach contractual completion date or earlier; (KR2) average labor-hour variance per project ±10% of estimate; (KR3) equipment-hours used within 10% of plan.

Review contracts, scopes of work, drawings and specifications to determine required services, materials, machinery and crew size for each job.
Prepare or contribute to field estimates that account for labor rates, material prices, machine hours, and consumables; validate estimator assumptions with site data.
Develop and execute daily and weekly work plans; schedule crews and equipment; assign tasks and monitor progress against plan.
Operate, coordinate and supervise use of heavy equipment typical to hardscape work (excavators, compactors, skid steers) and ensure regular maintenance and safe operation.
Enforce site safety protocols and environmental controls; conduct daily toolbox talks; ensure PPE use and compliance with OSHA and company standards.
Inspect and approve completed work phases for compliance with drawings, tolerances, material specifications and company quality standards; document measurements and completion photographs.
Manage on-site subcontractors and specialty trades; coordinate interfaces and verify scope and quality of subcontracted work.
Identify site issues and implement practical corrections or escalate with recommended scope/cost adjustments; process change-order documentation in coordination with project management.

Key skills, abilities and knowledge required

Technical knowledge of hardscape construction (pavers, retaining walls, segmental block, natural stone, concrete flatwork, grading, drainage and base preparation); ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and grading details; estimating and basic construction math skills; crew leadership and hands-on journeyman-level installation ability; equipment operation familiarity and ability to coordinate maintenance; strong site-level safety knowledge (OSHA and company standards) and incident prevention skills; clear oral and written communication for interactions with customers, subcontractors and internal stakeholders; recordkeeping and documentation discipline; problem-solving and adaptability to field conditions; time management and scheduling capability. Experience and credentials that support performance include several years of field hardscape installation experience, prior supervisory responsibility, valid driver’s license, and relevant safety certifications (e.g., OSHA 10/30). Familiarity with landscape estimating software, basic CAD/site-plan reading, and formal training in crew coaching are beneficial and may be developed on the job as part of role expectations.
